8P8C är det korrekta namnet på den modulärplugg som kallas "RJ-45" i folkmun. Det är ett modulärt kontaktdon som används på TP-kablar (Twisted Pair, nätverkskabel). RJ utläses Registered Jack och finns i flera varianter. Det formella namnet är 8P8C medan RJ-45 uppstått som ett missförstånd (Eight Position, Eight Contact). [1][2][3][4] A telephone-system-standard RJ45 plug has a key which excludes insertion in an un-keyed 8P8C socket. [5] 8P8C har stift för åtta ledare.
8P8C-kontakten används bland annat till följande kablar:
- Rak ethernet-TP-kabel
- Korsad ethernet-TP-kabel
- Rollover-kabel
- Seriell kabel, med 8P8C (RJ-45) i ena änden och en DE9 kontakt i den andra.
När man tillverkar en TP-kabel med 8P8C (RJ-45) finns det två typer av kopplings- och färgscheman, T568A och T568B.
