Svarthuvad bulbyl delas in i fyra underarter:[2]
- Pycnonotus atriceps atriceps - förekommer i nordöstra Indien till sydvästra Kina, Sydostasien, Bali, Borneo och Palawan
- Pycnonotus atriceps hyperemnus - förekommer på Sumatra, Simeulue, Nias, Mentawai, Bangka och Belitungöarna
- Pycnonotus atriceps baweanus - förekommer Bawean (Java Sea)
- Pycnonotus atriceps hodiernus - förekommer på Maratuaöarna (Celebes Sea)
