Wikipedia:2023 WMF RfC Hub

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are currently four discussions proceeding regarding the relationship between the Wikimedia Foundation and the English Wikipedia. Interested editors can find them at:

  1. Wikipedia:Village pump (WMF)/Archive 6#RfC to issue a non-binding resolution to the Wikimedia Foundation
  2. Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#RfC on reducing the privileges afforded to the WMF under WP:CONEXCEPT
  3. Wikipedia talk:Village pump (WMF)#RfC on behavioral instructions for the Village pump (WMF)
  4. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject WMF Relations

Details[edit]

RfC to issue a non-binding resolution to the Wikimedia Foundation proposes issuing three requests to the foundation, regarding Grants to organizations intending to be active on the English Wikipedia, Grants to organizations unrelated to supporting Wikimedia Projects, and Increased support for internal needs. Each of these is being voted on separately.

RfC on reducing the privileges afforded to the WMF under WP:CONEXCEPT proposes modifying CONEXCEPT to partially address the power disparity between the Wikimedia Foundation and the English Wikipedia and in doing so encourage them to see us as a partner rather than a subordinate.

RfC on behavioral instructions for the Village pump (WMF) proposes applying behavioral instructions based on those in force at ARBCOM to the Village pump (WMF) as part of an effort to address some of the concerns that the WMF has with engaging in more frequent communication with us at the English Wikipedia.

WikiProject WMF Relations is a WikiProject established as part of the drafting of this RfC. It has three primary purposes:

  1. To identify and advocate for priorities of the community in relation to the Wikimedia Foundation
  2. To support and foster communication between the Wikimedia Foundation and the English Wikipedia
  3. To ensure that the English Wikipedia is suitably represented on the Board of Trustees

There are open ended discussions taking place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject WMF Relations about the specifics of these purposes and how best to achieve them. Editors interested in joining the project should add their name here.

    How exactly am I relevant to this...? ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 18:58, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You would have contributed to a related discussion, although I can't remember which one. BilledMammal (talk) 10:58, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping! I oppose the Foundation. Benjamin (talk) 19:30, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can I ask why we suddenly need all these discussions about the WMF-enwiki relationship, and why we have to have them all at once? I feel like most of the community has only limited bandwidth for responding to these sort of discussions, and that might have knock-on effects in who actually participates and what conclusions you draw. Andrew Gray (talk) 19:57, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrew Gray: The hope was that by providing them all that the same time, rather than slowly dripping them out, the community wouldn't get exhausted on the topic; they would simply provide their opinion once and then be able to forget about the whole thing rather than needing to come back to a different discussion a month or two later. BilledMammal (talk) 10:57, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in the middle of a period where I was off the grid and or barely here for >2 weeks. I support and am interested in your efforts and your proposals are milder than the ones I would have made and so would support whatever is arrived at. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 17:07, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the notification. I am interested but I am incredibly busy IRL right now so it will likely take me awhile to read all of this and respond. Is there any sort of deadline that I should be aware of? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 08:15, 5 October 2023
@Clovermoss: For Wikipedia:WikiProject WMF Relations, no deadline. For the rest, just the expiry and closures of the RfC's - they expire in about two weeks, but I expect it will take a couple of weeks for them to be closed. BilledMammal (talk) 10:56, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, BilledMammal. I've gone back to relatively normal Wikipedia activities a little while back (and commented on one of those RfCs already). I decided that there was only one I felt confident enough to really have an informed opinion on. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 11:22, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
