Event Description: AfroCROWD, NYU Libraries, and the NYU Institute of African American Affairs & Center for Black Visual Culture are coming together on the Juneteenth holiday to bring attention to Black culture and the African diaspora on Wikimedia platforms. How to prepare[edit]

  • Register to get the link to the event on Zoom: the entire event will take place online on Zoom.
  • Have your laptop or tablet ready: Editing Wikipedia is easier with a keyboard.
  • Have a published source to cite: Check out library resources listed below. If you like, bring an academic paper or other reliable source of information to cite, to support your addition to Wikipedia. You will use Wikipedia to distribute information from this source. Try to bring the highest quality most reputable source you can find for the information.
  • Create a Wikipedia account, if you do not have one already.
  • Social Media: Tweet, like, comment or follow us on social media. Our hashtags for today are #WikiJuneteenth, #SoulOfReasonWiki, #NYUWiki, and #AfroCROWD. Our Twitter handle is @AfroCROWDit and on Instagram and Facebook are @AfroCROWD.-->

Welcome to the day of the Edit-a-thon![edit]

What is Wikipedia?[edit]

Wikipedia is the fifth most visited website on earth (World Economic Forum), and the most-used encyclopedia ever. A couple million people have written bits of it, but most of Wikipedia is written by tens of thousands of volunteers around the world.[7] (See the statistics page for more information.) We start with a few improvements, learn, and build up from there. You, can, too!

Our mission for today[edit]

Thanks for coming today and helping make history with the #AfroCROWD initiative improving awareness and engagement of people of African Descent on Wikipedia and the open internet.

Today's mission: Add at least one sentence or other contribution to Wikipedia about a notable person of African descent or a place or cultural item associated with the the African Diaspora.

Let’s begin:[edit]

Get your account/ create a username: Please don’t use your real name. It should be 6-8 characters. If you need help, please ask a Wikimedia coach

  1. Add your user name to the Dashboard and fill out the Event Information Form if you haven't yet
  2. Listen to the training or if you are editing from home or online head here for the basics overview. Head here for a simplified tutorial.
  3. Browse Editing Ideas below and choose a topic to edit (or if you already have one skip to the next step)
  4. Edit: in short - (1) click edit (2) add a sentence (3) provide a citation (4) repeat
  5. Ask for help: Don’t worry about perfection, the Wiki Coaches are here to help you.-->

Editing contribution types for new Wiki editors:[edit]

Is this your very first time? Try this:

  • Add a biographical sentence on Wikipedia: Start with a name, a birthday, an occupation or title,  what they famously did,  and (very importantly) a citation to verify your information from a credible source(s).
  • Add a citation to an existing Wikipedia page: find a person, organization, or work of art you are interested in and add a citation. You could add a citation to the episode that features your topic, or search library resources to find good sources to cite.
  • Add a sentence to the Soul of Reason Wikipedia draft page: if there is interest, we'll have a breakout room dedicated to drafting a new article on the show.
  • Add an episode to Wikidata: check out the list of episodes below and claim one!
  • Add an image to Wikimedia Commons

How to make a citation (bibliographical reference):[edit]

1) First, click on the pencil icon on the right to begin using "Visual Editor". Visual editor makes editing easier - like writing a school paper.

2) In Visual Editor, click on the area you want to add the citation. Then click cite. If you have a website as a source, add the website to the blank area.

If you do not have a website source, click manual and follow the prompts. Then click publish. If you have questions, ask a Wikimedia coach or go to Wikipedia:Tutorial/Citing sources.

3) Then click publish.
