Beskrivning

Ferry ships on the route to Finland. Tallink was a joint Soviet - Finnish venture from the Perestroika period of 1989. The ship on the left, MS Tallink, was the first and only ship on the tourist route between Helsinki and Tallinn Estonian independence followed in 1991. After several changes of name, in 1996, AS Hansatee commenced operation, trading as Tallink, as here. At this time, ships were chartered and from 2002 onwards new ships were bought. Now part of the Tallink- Silja group. (AS Tallink Grupp bought the Finnish Silja business in 2006) Perhaps someone can identify the ferry on the right (**see below and comments) - the yellow bar with Estonian flag logo might indicate a Stockholm connection. I think it is the MS Mare Balticum owned by Estline between 1994 and 1996. The ship was originally the Diana II , built by Meyer in Papenburg for AB Slite operating the Viking line between Finland and Sweden. Now known as the Meloodia, having been renamed and replaced in August 1996 when the Regina Baltica replaced her. The renamed Meloodia then operated to Helsinki with Tallink. Estline, a Swedish-Estonian venture was founded in 1990 and merged with Tallink in 2000 and which operated the ill-fated MS Estonia which sank in 1994 THese days the ships are much larger, thanks to @koski jukovovic.

      • The history of the Mare Balticum vessel makes interesting reading at the www.estline.ee website, built as the Diana II in 1979 for the Sweden-Finland service of Slite AB, renamed Vironia alongside the ill fated Estonia in Autumn 1994 then modified and renamed before entering service on 11 November 1994. In September 1996, after this photo, Nordström & Thulin replaced the MS Mare Balticum with the MS Anna Karenina, renamed the Regina Baltica for the route to Sweden.
The MS Mare Balticum was then sold to the Tallink line in the next berth here as the MS Meloodia, and served on their route to Helsinki until 2006, after when she became a service vessel ARV1.
