Beskrivning

Knight, James. Moses Norton’s draught of the Northern Parts of Hudsons Bay Laid Down on Ind’n Inform’n & Brot Home By Him [facsimile]. Scale not given. In: John Warkentin and Richard I. Ruggles. Manitoba Historical Atlas : a Selection of Facsimile Maps, Plans, and Sketches from 1612 to 1969. Winnipeg: Historical and Scientific Society of Manitoba, 1760, p. 88. As reproduced by, Winnipeg: Historical and Scientific Society of Manitoba.

Later in the eighteenth century, a more complicated map than that sent by Knight to London was obtained by Moses Norton, the Factor at Churchill Fort. His informants were, similarly, Northern Indians who were familiar with the vast stretch of land from the Bay to Athabaska country. This map was drawn on animal parchment, possibly by the Indians themselves, or by Norton during their interrogation at the Fort. Again, as on the Knight map, the marine coast extends north and south, with the entire extension of Melville and Boothia Peninsulas missing. The Hudson Bay coast is better aligned, and the Nelson-Hayes river route sweeps in from the west to east. A larger share of Northern Manitoba is shown on this sketch, though in a skewed and generalized fashion. Scale is inconsistent on the map, witness the exaggerated distance between the Churchill and Seal rivers in comparison with the much greater actual distances between the Seal river and the northwest lakes and rivers of the Athabaska region. The difficult course of the Churchill river is depicted by symbols indicating falls and rapids, and the network of lakes of various sizes, reached along the Churchill, and Seal rivers is drawn. “Ye Great Lake” with its downstream sister lake would be Southern Indian lake, and Northern Indian Lake, and the other “Large Lake” in the upper Seal river area would likely be Tadoule Lake. The simplified line of the Saskatchewan-Grass River-Nelson river route connects in the interior with the Athabaska country. “An old French House” refers likely to the old French post at the Pas. (Warkentin and Ruggles. Historical Atlas of Manitoba. map 33, p. 88)

Map prepared in black ink by R.I. Ruggles, from original manuscript (map G. 2/8) in the Archives, Hudson's Bay Company, London. Manuscript prepared in pencil on animal parchment. Drawn for Moses Norton by several Indians.
