Title: The Three Maries at the Sepulchre Origination: William Blake: inventor, delineator, colorist Composition Date: 1800-03 Note: Although inscribed "1803" by Blake, in a letter to Thomas Butts of Oct. 1800 Blake comments that "I have not got any Forwarder with the three Marys or with any other of your commissions...." (Erdman page 712). Thus, Blake may have begun some work on The Three Maries at the Sepulchre as early as 1800. Butts received the finished work in July or Aug. 1803. Number of Objects: 1 Object Size: 37.0 x 40.3 cm. Number of Leaves: 1 Leaf Size: 37.0 x 40.3 cm. Medium: pencil, pen and ink, and water color Support: paper, probably laid Watermark: A Strasbourg lily (twice), "GR," and "W BRIDGES 1794" Penned Numbers: none Frame Lines: none Provenance Name: Fitzwilliam Museum Date: 1949 Dealer: none recorded Price: £1,155 Note: Commissioned from Blake by Thomas Butts in 1800 and received by Butts in July or Aug. 1803; by inheritance in 1845 to Thomas Butts, Jr.; by inheritance in 1862 to Frederick J. Butts; offered Sotheby's, 24 June 1903, lot 3 (bought in at £120 by "Manning"); by inheritance in 1905 to the widow of Frederick J. Butts and sold by her in April 1906 through Carfax & Co. to W. Graham Robertson; sold from his collection, Christie's, 22 July 1949, lot 37 (£1,115 to the executors of Robertson's estate for presentation through the National Art Collections Fund to the Fitzwilliam Museum).
