Summer of Love
Summer of Love var ett socialt fenomen i mitten av 1967, då minst 100 000 personer samlades i Haight-Ashbury-kvarteret i San Francisco, och tog initiativ till ett större kulturellt och politiskt skifte. Medan hippies även samlades i New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, Washington, DC, Chicago, Miami, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, och runtom i Europa, var San Francisco centrum för hippierevolution,[1] och sammansmältningspunkt för musik, psykoaktiva droger, sexuell frihet, kreativa uttryck, och politik. Summer of Love kom att definiera 1960-talet, då hippiemotkulturen blev känd hos allmänheten.[2] De unga människornas samlingar ses ofta som ett socialt experiment, eftersom alternativa livsstilar blev allt vanligare, både under sommaren och kommande åren. Bland dessa livsstilar återfanns alternativa samhällen; fri och gemensam fördelning av resurser, ofta bland personer som inte kände varandra; och fri kärlek.[3]
Som kontrast blev mitten av 1967 en av de våldsammaste somrarna i USA:s historia — detta på grund av raskravaller/uppror på platser som Detroit och Newark. Denna aspekt har gjort att man ofta talar om 1967 som den "Långa, heta sommaren". Orsaken till våldet anses vara rasdiskriminering mot afroamerikaner, och frustrationen och ilskan det ledde till.[4][5][6]
