Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia (ofta förkortat Heroes III eller HoMM3) är ett turordningsbaserat strategispel utvecklat av New World Computing och ursprungligen utgivet av The 3DO Company till Windows 1999.[1][2] Spelet fick senare versioner för bland annat Mac och Linux.[3][4]

Spelet utspelar sig i samma fiktiva universum som delar av Might and Magic-serien och följer drottning Catherine Gryphonhearts försök att återta kungariket Erathia efter att hennes far mördats och landet invaderats.[1][2]

Handling

Handlingen berättas huvudsakligen genom en kampanjsvit på kontinenten Antagarich. Efter att Erathias kung Nicholas Gryphonheart mördats faller riket för invasioner, och drottning Catherine återvänder för att samla allierade och återta landet. Konflikten trappas upp när flera fraktioner och riken dras in i kriget, samtidigt som necromantiker försöker använda den döde kungen för egna syften.[1][2]

Spelupplägg

Heroes III kombinerar strategiskt resurs- och stadsbygge med utforskning på en äventyrskarta. Spelaren styr hjältar som samlar resurser och artefakter, intar gruvor och städer samt bygger upp rekryterings- och ekonomibyggnader i sina städer.[5]

Strider utkämpas turordningsbaserat på ett separat slagfält där trupper representeras som staplar (eng. stacks) av samma enhetstyp. Hjälten påverkar striden via exempelvis magi och bonusar, men är i grundspelet normalt inte en separat stridsenhet som kan angripas direkt.[2]

Spelet innehåller åtta fraktioner/stadstyper i grundversionen, med olika truppuppsättningar och spelstilar. Kartor kan även innehålla alternativa segerkrav och större spelvärldar, inklusive underjordiska områden i vissa scenarier.[1][6]

Utveckling och lansering

Heroes of Might and Magic III utvecklades av New World Computing med Jon Van Caneghem och Gregory Fulton bland de krediterade speldesignerna. David Mullich anges som regissör, och musiken komponerades av Paul Romero, Rob King och Steve Baca.[7]

Expansioner och utgåvor

Två expansionspaket släpptes till spelet: Armageddon's Blade och The Shadow of Death.[5] Grundspelet och expansionspaketen paketerades senare tillsammans i en samlingsutgåva (Heroes III Complete).[8]

HD Edition

En officiell HD-version (Heroes of Might & Magic III – HD Edition) släpptes 2015 med uppdaterad grafik och stöd för högre upplösningar.[9] I recensioner uppmärksammades samtidigt att HD-utgåvan saknade expansionsinnehåll, vilket ofta lyftes som en betydande nackdel jämfört med äldre samlingsutgåvor.[10][9]

Mottagande

Vid originalsläppet fick spelet mycket goda omdömen i spelpressen. I Computer Gaming World (nummer 180, 1999) beskrev recensenten spelet som en vidareutveckling av seriens kärnspel med stor bredd i innehåll, samtidigt som vissa invändningar gällde bland annat kampanjernas upplägg och nätspelsprestanda i dåtidens miljö.[11] Även GameSpot gav spelet högt betyg och framhöll det som ett mycket starkt strategispel.[2]

Varelser

Det finns totalt åtta typer av städer spelaren kan välja på. Varje stad har sju unika varelser som kan rekryteras. Varelserna sorteras i level 1-7, där level sju är den starkaste. Varje typ har två versioner, en originalversion och en uppgraderad version.[12]

Varje enhet kostar guld, priset ökar per level. För level 7 varelser räcker inte guld, utan en specifik mängd av en resurstyp ingår också i köpesumman. Vilken typ av resurs varierar från varelse till varelse.[12] Ett bestämt antal varelser kan rekryteras från dag 1 varje vecka. Level 1 generar störst antal, därefter sjunker antalet för varje höjning av level.[12]
