LibreOffice är en samling kontorsprogram utvecklade av The Document Foundation.
Programmet finns tillgängligt till de flesta operativsystem, såsom BSD, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, Unix och Windows. LibreOffice använder formatet OpenDocument, som är ett öppet filformat skapat för att kunna öppnas och redigeras på olika kontorsprogram. LibreOffice kan även öppna och spara Microsofts olika format, såsom xls, och doc och Office Open XML-formaten, liksom Rich Text Format. Även OpenOffice.org XML-formaten (sxw, sxc med flera) kan öppnas, men från och med version 4.3 inte sparas[1]. LibreOffice-programmen kan även öppna och importera grafik i SVG-format, med flera. LibreOffice stöder avancerad typografi via Graphite[2] och, från och med version 5.3, OpenType[3].

Historia
LibreOffice startades den 28 september 2010 av utvecklare som jobbat med Oracles kontorsprogram OpenOffice.org. Gruppen startade organisationen The Document Foundation som i sin tur äger kontorsprogrammet LibreOffice. Anledningen till att utvecklarna hoppade av från Oracle var att man fruktade att Oracle skulle lägga ned OpenOffice.org, precis som man gjort med OpenSolaris.[11] Den första officiella versionen av LibreOffice, 3.3.0, släpptes den 25 januari 2011.[12] Hittills (juli 2017) har fjorton större versioner av LibreOffice släppts: 3.3[13], 3.4[14], 3.5[15], 3.6[16], 4.0[17], 4.1[18], 4.2[19], 4.3[20], 4.4[21], 5.0[22], 5.1[23], 5.2[24], 5.3[25], 5.4[26]. LibreOffice 5.0.0, som bland annat introducerar 64-bit för Windows (Vista och senare), släpptes den 5 augusti 2015[27]. Version 5.4.0 släpptes den 28 juli 2017[28]. Nästa större version, 6.0[29], planeras att släppas vecka 5 (29 januari – 4 februari) 2018[30].
