A brief version of this article is avaliable in This month in GLAM, November 2016, Sweden report

Sätra brunn was founded as spa house in 1700. In 1747, the property was donated to the , who managed it for two and a half century. At Sätra brunn, almost all medicine staff get their practice, while people, mainly women, did get treatment for different forms of disorders and illness. The university period lasted until 1998. Since 2002, new owners has established a business with hotel, spa and conferences.

Brunnsmuseet is a small museum institution without any employees. The museum was opened in 2014 and we've had three summer exhibitions so far. The exhibition is built up during April, opened in early May and closed and removed in September. The museum is housed in one of the old bath houses, built in 1868 and named after the famous doctor , the curator between 1886-1900.

From the beginning in 2014, we've had a focus on Wikipedia, Creative Commons and openness. Both in 2015 and 2016, photo exhibitions was organised, with the result that today all hundred buildings of the property at least have one free-licensed image. Also, pictures from our earlier exhibitions is available on Commons.

This focus has mainly three reasons:

  • Firstly, it feels just as the right thing. There are undoubtedly a idealistic component in this, that are similar to the idea of open access and life-long learning.
  • Secondly, we couldn't possibly have all required competence in-house. By contributing to the community of free content, we've wish (and have seen) how the community has helped us out by giving their time, perspectives and knowledge. For example, User:Annika64 did create the articles of six former curators of Sätra brunn, making the list complete for 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Finally, we couldn't have a better way to reach out. Wikipedia is well-known, accessible, cost-efficient and (potentially) reliable source of information. The alternative of creating our own platform would be less transparent and trickier to update. It would be for a much higher cost, and probably just a few people would find and appreciate our work.

Digitalisation has been a major duty so far. Thanks to public donations and lending, we've digitalised at least 10.000 pictures and postcards so far, as well as documents, films and audio. As expected, the vast majority of this effort isn't possible to make public due to copyright restrictions. However, the content that do have a cleared copyright aren't as accessible as we'd wished. The digitalised material is at current stage not organised, nor in a database, neither in folders. It's a major concern for us to reconstruct the current flat-file structure into something more useful and accessible.

We haven't received any public funds for digitalisation or exhibitions. Thus in September, we were given 30.000 SEK (around 3000€) from the local Sala sparbank to make our digital archive accessible and available online. With help from Wikimedia Sverige, a upload template was made as a combined information and categorisation engine. Images with the templates are placed in either of two categories: Media provided by Brunnsmuseet or Media from Brunnsmuseet exhibitions.

In October, we did put all our efforts together in a GLAM-project. Hopefully, the project will make others find and contribute to this project. It's important to say that this project is not owned by Brunnsmuseet. Instead, we do like to see this as a community-driven project, that is encouraged and maintained by continually new uploads provided by Brunnsmuseet.

This is also why we titled this project as Open Sources Sätra Brunn. This name does combine the spa house's springs, the embracing of open source software (we've installed our own internal MediaWiki as well as other open source technologies), and the written stories that has been told for at least three centuries. This also includes to reconnect with the academic tradition that has been present, to find the most reliable sources for use on Wikipedia and other forms of publication.

If you want to contribute to our work, please feel free to write something on my discussion page (english is fine), send me and e-mail, and fallow Brunnsmuseet in social media (all Swedish): Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
