Den felmätta människan
Den felmätta människan (Engelska:The Mismeasure of Man) är en bok från 1981 skriven av paleontologen Stephen Jay Gould. Boken är en historia om och kritik av de metoder och motiv som Gould menade underlåg den så kallade biologiska determinismen, med vilket Gould avsåg uppfattningen att "the social and economic differences between human groups — primarily races, classes, and sexes — arise from inherited, inborn distinctions and that society, in this sense, is an accurate reflection of biology."[1]
Boken kritiserade också det som Gould uppfattade som det huvudsakliga temat för biologisk determinism, nämligen att "worth can be assigned to individuals and groups by measuring intelligence as a single quantity." Gould diskuterade två framträdande tekniker för att mäta en sådan kvantitet, kraniometri och psykologiska tester. Gould menade att dessa metoder lider av två djupgående felslut. Det första felslutet, enligt Gould, var reifikation, det vill säga, "our tendency to convert abstract concepts into entities." Detta inkluderade IQ och g (generell intelligensfaktor), som har varit hörnstenarna av mycken intelligensforskning. Det andra felslutet är rangordnande, eller vår "propensity for ordering complex variation as a gradual ascending scale."
Den felmätta människan kritiserade "the abstraction of intelligence as a single entity, its location within the brain, its quantification as one number for each individual, and the use of these numbers to rank people in a single series of worthiness, invariably to find that oppressed and disadvantaged groups—races, classes, or sexes—are innately inferior and deserve their status."[2][förtydliga]
Boken utgavs i svensk översättning 1983.[3]
Bokens andra upplaga (1996) reviderades för att utmana de kontroversiella argument som Richard Herrnstein och Charles Murray lade fram i The Bell Curve.
