Ophiocordyceps sphecocephala är en svampart[8] som först beskrevs av Klotzsch ex Berk., och fick sitt nu gällande namn av G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung, Hywel-Jones & Spatafora 2007. Ophiocordyceps sphecocephala ingår i släktet Ophiocordyceps och familjen Ophiocordycipitaceae.[9][10] Inga underarter finns listade i Catalogue of Life.[9]
